Diversion: The Assignment Killer

Disclaimer: I’m only writing what the Holy Spirit has revealed to me.
To divert means “to cause (someone or something) to change course or turn from one direction to another; to distract.”
That sounds like something Satan would do, right? He would love to divert us from the path that God has set before us so that we won’t live out our purpose!
I remember a dream I had where I was driving in East Cobb. I could see the road so clearly as I was familiar with the area. As I was driving, I noticed polices posted up on both sides of the road. One stopped me and said, “You’re going the wrong way!” I was puzzled because I knew I was heading in the right direction to my destination. Once again he informed me, “You’re going in the wrong direction.” I asked him, “Isn’t there a McDonald’s up the street to the left?” He denied it. But instead of taking his advice and turning around, I continued in the direction I was going. And guess what I saw as I kept going in that direction!! The McDonald’s to the left. He tried it! And that’s how cunning Satan is! That’s why we have to be alert at all times!
This dream is in correlation to the dreams that I speak about in the following passages.

Over the past month or so, I’ve had the same dream over and over! I became a little frustrated as I recalled the ending of the dream. I prayed and asked God to reveal the meaning of the dream, but there was no answer. At least, that’s what I thought!
Monday (Memorial Day) was the last time I had the dream and I prayed once again for the Holy Spirit to give me understanding of it! This morning while I was praying, the word diversion rung so loud in my spirit. Before I looked it up, I thought about how the enemy tries to keep us from going in the right direction that we need to go in. I also thought about how he uses things and people to distract us and to keep us busy from the work we know we’re supposed to be doing. To sum it up, Satan desires for us to be ineffective in our walk and service unto the Lord. So what does he do? If we don’t discern his plot, he gets us to set our attention on things that seem good at the moment but in reality are nothing but hindrances and diversions to our walk.
Destined for Purpose
Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” We are destined for purpose. That means that before we were even born, God already had in His mind who and what we’d become! Not only that, He knew the gifts and talents we would use in service to His Kingdom. But that enemy that is always out looking for someone to devour, wants to keep us from fulfilling the very purpose that God has called us to. He will do whatever he can to stop us.
Wrong Way
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” —Matthew 7:13-14 KJV
Let’s take a look at Proverbs 14:12. It states: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
Just picture yourself standing at a fork in the road with signs pointing in both directions. The sign on the left says, “The Hard Way” and the sign on the right says, “The Easy Way”. So you stand there, contemplating which road to take—the easy way or the hard way. You finally make up in your mind that your life has had enough struggles and trials and you no longer want to take the hard way out. So you begin down the path of The Easy Way.
Why is it that we always want to take the easy way out? Why is it that we’d prefer to pass off fasting, praying, and studying the Word? Why is it that we’ve become so passive when it comes to the things of God? Why is it that we are willing to give up when troubles come our way? Why? Let me tell you, nothing comes easy if it’s intended to have lasting results. In order for something to stand against any test, it must be built upon the right foundation! (See Matthew 7:24-27)
Satan often dangles things in our faces that seem to be pleasing to the eyes and could reap benefits in our lives. Maybe it is a new job that has great benefits, yet it will require you to work on Sundays and also take up most of your time and keep you from spending time with God in prayer, the Word, and also with your family. Maybe it is a title that you desire that will give you all the publicity you want but deep down inside you know that is not the office that God has called you to operate in. Maybe it is a person you just met who seems to be the “one” and that you have developed feelings for, but this person isn’t living a righteous lifestyle. Maybe you’re just tired of the things you are encountering in your life and Satan presents something that will “ease your mind”, so to say, and instead of seeking God’s face, you now have a habit that you run to every time things come your way. Not only that, you throw your hands up and say forget following Christ altogether.
In this hour, we have to be sober and vigilant. Remember when Nehemiah was rebuilding the wall and how the men plotted to get him to stop? Nehemiah responded by saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? (Nehemiah 6:3)
Benefits as Children of God
As sons and daughters of the living God, we have been given power and authority over the enemy (Luke 10:19). We have been given the ability to withstand Satan’s attacks by putting on the full armor of God. In addition, we have to be mindful that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the grave is the same Spirit that lives in us. God desires for us to overcome and stand against the wiles of the enemy so that we can finish the work that He has called us to do.

After the dreams, I started evaluating my life and realized how I’d been spending so much time doing one particular task that I’d missed out on doing what I know I’m supposed to do. At first, it didn’t seem harmful but as time has passed, I could see how being so consumed on that task caused me to put off my assignment. And I’ve had such a longing and yearning to write. It’s as if God has been nudging me to do so! When I shared about my journey to Georgia in my previous posts, I was in my zone! I was overjoyed to share! I was in that place and I was excited to hear the testimonies that came from my obedience to share. So just imagine not doing what you are called to do and how it can affect so many lives.
Maybe this is why I’ve had the dream over and over! Maybe this is why God has been trying to get my attention! I’d put something else above His assignment. Thank God for the Holy Spirit in revealing things and allowing me the time to repent and get back to the assignment.
My advice to you today is to stay focused on the assignment that God has given you! Don’t become distracted by other things because that’s exactly what the enemy wants you to do. Diversion can cause you to miss out on completing your assignment, and just imagine the effect it would have on future generations. You don’t have the time to succumb to the spirit of diversion! Stay focused! Pray against the enemy’s device of diversion! And pray that God will sharpen your discernment and help you to stay focused on your God-given assignment! (Read Nehemiah 6) And remember, the easy way is not always the best way and could be the very trap that causes you to abort your mission and could cause you to die spiritually. Stay woke!
Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? —Galatians 5:7
“I must do the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”—John 9:4-5
